Who Am I?
I’m Emma Tarpey, and I’m a physiotherapist, clinical specialist in complex handling, and moving/handling trainer.
My Professional Background
I completed my Physiotherapy degree with the intention of continuing on to veterinary Physiotherapy to complement my work in equine rehabilitation. However, life had other plans for me, and I specialised in the complex handling of people. My main specialism and interests lie in managing the bariatric or plus-sized person.
A Day in My Life as a Trainer for OFI would see me...
Either working with people who complete manual handling or people handling. I normally start all my sessions by giving delegates the opportunity to influence the aims and objectives of the day in order to provide them with the most beneficial learning experience possible. I like to get stuck into practical techniques fairly early on in the day and as much as possible in the delegates’ real world! This has taken me onto the shop floor in many different industries during my time with OFI.
The best thing about my job is...
Being able to work with delegates to find relevant and useful solutions to their handling challenges, especially when working in people handling, where improving the handling skills of the staff not only keeps the staff safer but can improve the experience for the person being handled.
My most rewarding moment at OFI:
I find it most rewarding when you start with a group of delegates who don’t believe you will be able to teach them anything they don’t already know, and by the end of the day, their feedback forms list all the helpful things they’ve learnt!
Outside of OFI...
Outside of OFI… I work for an NHS Trust as the Lead Clinical Manual Handling Advisor and also run an equine rehabilitation business, as well as training and competing my own horses.
My approach and commitment to your company’s training needs:
Providing relevant, useful, and enjoyable training for all delegates in an environment where people feel comfortable and confident to get involved and have fun.
